TotalEnergies has been a long-time partner in SATORP in Jubail (Eastern Region) along with Saudi Aramco. This joint venture, where TotalEnergies holds a 37.5% stake, operates a 460,000 bbl/d refinery that began operations in 2014.
Satorp is completely integrated in TTE decarbonization strategy since :
• It has an ambitious roadmap for reducing CO2 emissions has been drawn up, with long-term plans for carbon capture and storage. In the short term, SATORP is implementing energy efficiency measures that helped the refinery offset annual emissions of more than 700,000 tons of CO2 in 2024.
• Satorp has demonstrated its status as a pioneer in the production of SAF in the MENA region with the first drop of SAF manufactured in the refinery in 2023. This co-processing project is beeing implemented by Satorp and its shareholders and will enable to respond to the growing SAF demand in the region.
• Satorp is working on new technologies to develop circular products.
In the last 2 projects the main challenges are not only technological but it is also to create a partnership with local actors to ensure the feedstock.
TotalEnergies and Saudi Aramco have taken the final investment decision (FID) to develop AMIRAL in Jubail, a world-scale petrochemicals platform owned and operated by SATORP. This platform will convert materials like gas and naphtha from SATORP, as well as ethane or light naphtha from Saudi Aramco. The project includes a combined feedstock cracker capable of producing 1.65 Mta of ethylene, two polyethylene lines (500 kta capacity each), a butadiene extraction unit, and additional by-product units. This project represents a $11 billion investment, with construction underway as of 2023 and commercial operation targeted for 2027.
